Will the public pledge to volunteer for charities?

In December 2019 YouGov ran a poll, asking the public if they ever made a New Year’s Resolution to participate or volunteer in charity work. Only 6% of people said they had. Women were more likely than men, and younger age groups (18-34) were more likely than their older counterparts*.

Charity-led volunteering screeched to a depressing halt in 2020. For me those meant interrupted river restoration and walk-leading duties. Meanwhile, other neighbourhood volunteering initiatives spontaneously sprang into action, if not overdrive.

Where I live, we were sewing scrubs like rabbits on Duracell.

So what’s it going to look like in 2021?

Who will our role models be?

Who can possibly predict…? This year produced some fascinating role models, from UK favourites like Captain Tom and Marcus Rashford, to Dr Anthony Fauci in the US. And how can we forget the inspirational female pantheon of leaders: New Zealand’s PM Jacinda Ardern; President Tsai Ing-wen in Taiwan; and Finland’s Sanna Marin to name but three?

What we were briefly able to forget, of course, was our own PM’s start to the year. I wonder what he’ll have to say on 2 January 2021…
